Science educator and astronomer Mr. Samir Dhurde who works at the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune gave a public talk on the “Pluto Flyby” by the New Horizons Spacecraft.

Sherlock Astronomy Series in April/May 2015: 

Akashmitra organized this particular lecture series as a part of learning to decode astronomically useful information through photos/data that is usually available easily.

Public Star Party on 11th April, 2015:

A public star party was held by Akashmitra at Pirangut (a close by place to Pune). This was part of our monthly star party or public outreach activity.

Group Photo

Observe the Moon –  Aundh event on 22nd February, 2015:

Akashmitra as a part of popularising Astronomy went to 4 residential societies in Aundh (an area in Pune) and showed the Moon through telescopes to the residents. The event was done on 22nd Feb, 2015. We had a total turnout of more than 250 people. The event was done concurrently through these 4 societies. We thank Kubera Gulshan Society, Twin Towers, Supriya Towers and Kumar Padmalaya for having us and giving us such a beautiful response!

Prof. Somak Raychaudhari’s talk at Akashmitra in August, 2011.

Prof. Raychaudhari spoke on “Galaxies and their formation” at Akashmitra in August 2011. An excellent speaker, astrophysicist and science popularizer, he spoke on this topic in an extremely professional yet simple to understand language.

Total Solar Eclipse of 22nd July, 2009.

On 22nd July 2009, members of Akashmitra went on a tour to the northern part of India near the city of Patna to witness the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century.

Bellatrix Virtual Observatory and Akashmitra

In 2011, Akashmitra collaborated with the Bellatrix Virtual Telescope Observatory in Italy to observe deep sky objects using a 17 inch fully robotic telescope stationed in Italy. The telescope was operated virtually by our members in Pune via the internet and photographed the various deep sky objects like the Whirlpool Galaxy or the Owl Nebula.
