Akashmitra and the Fergusson College ASTRO Club of Pune, conducted a public lecture of Prof. Dipankar Bhattacharya on “India’s ASTROSAT satellite mission”. ASTROSAT will be a multi-wavelength satellite dedicated for research in astronomy and Prof. Bhattacharya has made huge contributions to this satelliteĀ in designing of the coded mask imaging elements and data pipeline and analysis software.

The event was graced by Principal, Fergusson College, Dr. R. G. Pardeshi, Director, IUCAA, Dr. Somak Raychaudhury and Director, Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai and co-founder of Akashmitra, Arvind Paranjpye.

Prof. Bhattacharya enthralled the audience by showing how important ASTROSAT is and also why it is going to be a world class mission. The mission has had efforts of more than 10 years by scientists not just from India but also UK and Canada. He also explained the important role played by people from the instrumentation department in building all the sensitive instruments and payloads for ASTROSAT.

The audience not only comprised of students but also amateur astronomers from different clubs such as Khagol Vishwa, MIT astronomy club, VIT astro club ANTRIKSH, from colleges around Pune and also leading professionals.
