Akashmitra organized a public lecture on “Careers in Astronomy and Astrophysics” by Prof. Ajit Kembhavi, director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune on Friday 7th August, 2015. The lecture was held at the Chandrasekhar Auditorium of IUCAA in the Savitribai Phule Pune University campus.

Kembhavi addressed an audience of about 300 people comprising the amateur astronomy community, students and their parents. He spoke on various opportunities present in India for students and what they can do after their engineering or pure science courses.

Kembhavi had also invited 4 students doing research in Astronomy – Hamsa Padmanabhan, Kaustubh Waghmare, Varun Bhalerao and Avyartha Ghosh.

The event was also live streamed on the internet by IUCAA Science Popularization division and people from Los Angeles, Nottingham, Mumbai and other places in the world had joined in.

Akashmitra had also invited other astronomy clubs from the city such as Astron, Khagol Vishwa, COEP astronomy club. These amateur astronomy clubs felicitated Prof. Kembhavi at the end for his efforts in bringing the amateur society closer to professional institutes in India like IUCAA.

This probably would have been his last public lecture as director of IUCAA as he will be retiring on 31st August, 2015.
